Bathrooms are some of the most used areas of our homes and for most compact apartment homes bathrooms are small tight spaces. Here are some great bathroom decorating, designing and organising ideas to help you maximise the space in your bathroom!
Lighting plays a crucial role in any space. There are two components of lighting in any bathroom – natural light and indirect light. To make the most of natural light make for large windows and where windows are not possible; think of other options like a skylight. Keep windows glass and window treatments minimal and in light colours to allow as much light in. In cases where natural light is not available, indirect light from multiple sources is necessary. Think recessed soft white lights rather than yellow lights to brighten up the bathroom. Concealed lighting behind mirrors, a drop chandelier or pendant also make from some great options.
Glass instantly makes any space feel larger and open. If you plan on having an enclosed shower area, consider using glass to make your bathroom look more open and bright. I also love the use of glass for shelving or under sink storage. Use frosted glass or clear glass on your windows to allow in light. Glass trays and jars for accessories and small things are also another way to keep things light. And don’t forget the role a large mirror can play in reflecting light and making your bathroom appear larger and more spacious
I cannot impress enough on the role storage in a bathroom plays on maximising space. Think of using otherwise dead areas to your advantages, like the wall space above your toilet or commode can act as great storage for towels, toilet paper, and other necessities or the space below your sink can be organised to hold hair tools, toiletries and other knick knacks. Consider using bins and baskets to hold things, as they not only keep things organized but can be a great way to add colour and texture to the bathroom. Use the space behind the door with hooks for hanging towels and other accessories.
4. Tiles and Paint
One of my favorite tips when designing a bathroom is the use of large floor tiles to make it look larger. Smaller tiles visually break down space and make it look smaller and tighter. Smaller tiles work great for shower walls or backsplashes. For an open feeling space, large tiles preferably in a single and lighter colour work best! Similarly, keep your paint choices light and with cool undertones. Soft grays, light blues, mint greens and muted pinks/lavenders all make for great choices in bathrooms. It’s also a good idea to restrict colours to one or two and within the same colour family to make for a monochromatic space.
Never underestimate the power of green in any space and most definitely your bathroom. A touch of green through small plants placed anywhere is a great way to breathe life and make your bathroom look fresh. If you don’t have a green thumb, consider using artificial plants that provide the feel with no hassle of maintenance!
