Tips to take care of your kitchen countertops during festive preparations

No Indian festivity is complete without an elaborate and lavish meal, prepared with great care and affection. You will find most of the members of a family working in tandem to put together a traditional meal, which can then be enjoyed along with extended families, relatives and friends.

The downside of this is that the kitchen is in use most of the time and the countertops are piled with every imaginable kind of food, vegetables, oils and spices. Therefore it is essential to take care of the countertops despite spills and stains and maintain its beauty and impeccable surface. The key to doing so is to choose the right material for your counter-tops; one which is non-porous, hard and durable.

Now most countertops are made of natural stone and since the different types of stones vary in colour, porosity and hardness, their strength and durability also varies, which means you have to be extra cautious with certain countertops as compared to others.

For instance, good quality granite stone which has been sealed well is extremely durable, resistant to scratches and stains and requires minimal maintenance. Similarly, engineered stone is a manufactured stone and is stronger and more durable than naturally occurring atone, and is also highly resistant. Alternately other types of stone, acrylic and wood countertops may be more susceptible to damage due to scratches, stains and heat.

In any case, here are a few things which you can do to take care of your kitchen countertop

  1. Keep plenty of heat resistant mats or stands around for your hot cooking vessels so you avoid keeping them directly on the countertop. Heat marks can be very difficult to get rid of.
  2. Clean up spills immediately. The longer you leave oils and other liquids on the countertop, the more chances of it percolating and leaving a permanent mark.
  3. Most countertops can be cleaned with warm water and a small amount of detergent. Avoid abrasive pads/ sponges and cloth.
  4. Always exercise caution when using harsh cleaners and first use them in an inconspicuous corner to check their effects before using them on your entire countertop.
