Common Tile Problems: Causes and How to Prevent Them

Today, tiles are not only associated with the general bathroom usage, but also with décor related usages. Tiles are available in a variety of stylish patterns and styles and they are an excellent way to instantly brighten up a room. However, tiles require proper maintenance. Choice of the tiles for a room must also be accurate. We encounter many problems while dealing with tiles as a form of décor or even as a practical component.

Loosened tile:

One of the major problems with tiles is that they get loosened from their original position. The tile is loosened from its substrate. The hollow sound of the tile and actual dismantling of the tile from the surface can detect this. This is caused due to a lack of control joints or soft joints in and around the perimeter of the area, or insufficient use of the adhesive. Different tile types expand and contract differently depending on the temperature and material and appropriate space for tension needs to be provided, if not they get loosened. A solution for this is Roff Fevimate PA, it is an acrylic based additive. To prevent such problems, Roff Fevimate PA can be added to the mortar bed, to reduce shrinkage and increase its compressive strengths.

Cracked tile:

The cracks are due to movement in the substrate. The tile or slab should be cured for at least four weeks to avoid cracking of the tiles. Use of anti-fracture membranes on tiles can also prevent crack formation on the tiles. Deflection of the substrate is the major cause for cracked tiles. Grout cracks are a form of cracked tiles.  Roff New Construction Tile Adhesive is a Polymer modified cement tile adhesive. Roff NCA is a blend of cement, graded sand and advanced polymers. The added polymers allow Roff NCA to accommodate movements due to thermal and physical changes hence protecting tiles from cracks.

Poor Workmanship:

Importance has to be given while placing the tiles. Grout work, tile spacing, layout, cutting and a host of other important things need to be considered. With the increasing demands for better work or no caulk visibility and narrow grout joints are possible to be made. Rearranging the tiles, which is a lot of manpower and economic wastage, can only change improper fixing.

Material usage:

Suitable types of materials need to be used on tiles at different places. For example, roofing felt will not be resistant to moisture and is not to be used in bathrooms. The desire to use cheaper materials to reduce costs will ultimately cause more problems than it will solve. Depending on the need of the room, the types of materials for the tiles have to be decided. Be it soundproof membranes, moisture-resistant membranes, heatproof membranes, or so.

Parts like shower panels of bathrooms, which are always exposed to high levels of moisture, need to be installed with tiles in a proper and precise manner. Moisture finds its way into the walls and the floor. Not creating proper slopes to drain water will lead to accumulation of water on tiles, which cause algal growth and makes tiles slippery. Puncturing of the moisture-proof membrane during installation also causes similar problems. To solve seepage in joints, Roff Rainbow Tile Mate, is a ready to use, non-shrinking tile joint filler. Roff Rainbow Tile Mate is a blend of white cement, special polymers and pigments and has good UV and water resistance. Moreover, it is available in a range of attractive shades to match the décor. It is polymer modified to provide flexibility in order to accommodate physical and thermal movements and also has high compressive strength.

Some of the common maintenance steps include ensuring that there is no observable algal or other membranous growth on the tiles. Tiles are smooth generally and can become slippery instantly. Tiles need to be washed regularly and need to be kept clean. Roff Cera Clean is available in the market, which has an adequate concentration of acid with detergent properties, ensuring that stains are removed without harming the tiles. Marble tiles especially need care, as they can turn yellow very fast. Start maintaining your tiles before it is too late.
