Strengthening concrete members

Cracks in structural members like concrete retaining wall where leakages are observed, needs to be strengthened by epoxy injection. Can be injected even if water / moisture is present

Method Statement

SURFACE PREPARATION AND APPLICATION

  • Mark out the crack in the concrete member.
  • Drill holes directly over the length of the crack using a drilling machine, at intervals of 6 to 9 inches along the length of the crack.
  • In case of cracks up to 2 mm wide, fix the injection nozzles directly over the crack, using a drilling machine.
  • Affix a nonreturn type of injection ports / nozzles in these holes with a fastsetting epoxy putty and let it dry for about 2 to 3 days.
  • Also, seal the crack between the ports with epoxy putty.
  • In cases where the crack is wider than 2 mm up to 4 to 5 mm, drill holes at the sides of the crack in a staggered fashion as shown in the picture, at intervals of 6 inches and affix them with epoxy putty as mentioned above.
  • Also, seal the face of the crack with a liberal application of the epoxy putty.
  • It is advised since epoxy putty hardens sufficiently in a period of 2 to 3 days to take sufficient pressure off the injection hose and the pressure that may develop while injecting the epoxy grout resin.
  • Start pumping in Dr. Fixit Epoxy Injection after mixing it in a pail or a container, with an appropriate injection pump.
  • Pumping can stop once the pressure is felt and no more epoxy resin can be injected.
  • Allow the resin to set for at least 7 full days, while it will harden and cures within the crack.
  • Overpainting or coating can be done on the concrete after the ports have been cut and removed, and the epoxy seal putty is ground off with a rotary scrubbing machine for surface preparation.

A. Yes, Dr. Fixit Epoxy Injection Grout has high as well as early strength development compressive & tensile once injected. As such loading constraints are not much of a concern in most cases & injection grouting can be conveniently executed.

Q. Can we use any grouting pump for injecting epoxy grouts? A. No, Dr. Fixit Epoxy Injection Grout being low viscous needs specialized equipment manual/electric which is designed for low viscosity pumping at high pressures. Generally, the specification of pumping equipment states the technical details & the purpose for which it can be utilized.  

Q. Can the grout be used for damp substrates? A. Ideally, it is not recommended. Although Dr. Fixit Epoxy Injection Grout may perform in certain damp substrates, it is highly recommended to use a moisture insensitive variant of epoxy grout for optimum benefits.  

Q. Is Dr. Fixit Epoxy Injection Grout effective in stopping active leakages? A. No, Ideally a hydrophobic Dr. Fixit PU injection grout foam is most suitable in such situations. Although a moisture insensitive variant of Dr. Fixit Epoxy Grout can be used as a secondary injection to seal the cavities once the active leaks are arrested.  

Q. Can we mix Dr. Fixit Epoxy Injection Grout with external fillers/polymers to make it cost effective? A. No, Strictly refrain from mixing any foreign substance in the grout. Dr. Fixit Epoxy Injection Grout is a prebatched system formulated for optimum performance when used as directed by the manufacturer&rsquos specification.

Epoxy injection grouts are exclusively used for structural strengthening & high end repair applications. Whereas, a prepacked cement grout in generally used for sealing capillaries in the concrete substrate & provide water tightness. Also, in comparison to the strength parameters, epoxy injection grouts have high as well as early strength development compressive & tensile once injected unlike the cement grouts where strength gain is gradual.
